COVID-19 Surveillance Dashboard

On May 1, 2024, COVID-19 hospitalization reporting requirements changed. The change in reporting requirements means data sources also changed. The sources for hospital data are now the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and COVID-NET, which is run by the CDC. Wastewater data, long-term care data and death data continue to be available and are displayed on this dashboard. For national trends and other indicators of COVID-19 spread, please use the CDC COVID Data Tracker.

Statewide COVID-19 Hospitalization

COVID-NET collects data on lab-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations from a network of over 300 acute-care hospitals in 13 states, including hospitals in Minnesota. Hospitalization rates are updated weekly.
About the COVID-NET data:
  • Seven of Minnesota’s 87 counties are represented in the data, which represents 55% of the state population.
  • Rates of COVID are likely to be underestimated because some COVID-19-associated hospitalizations might be missed due to undertesting, provider or facility practices, inconsistent test sensitivity, and the limited scope of the data. Rates presented also do not account for circumstances where testing practices may differ due to the patient's age, race or ethnicity, economic status, access to medical insurance, and more.

COVID-19 in wastewater

The University of Minnesota gathers and reports COVID-19 wastewater data. The data on this chart reflects COVID-19 wastewater levels from Jan. 02, 2023 onward at the Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant in Saint Paul. This plant serves 66 communities (1.8 million people) in the seven-county metro area. On average, the plant treats 172 million gallons of wastewater per day.
Viral count / liter represents the amount of the COVID-19 virus’ genetic material in wastewater. A high viral count often leads to an increase in COVID-19 cases. Similarly, a low viral count/liter suggests there are fewer cases of COVID-19.
This data is important for public health monitoring because viral count can serve as an early warning sign that the number of cases of COVID-19 is changing. Access the source for this data through the Minnesota Wastewater Surveillance Study.

COVID-19 Variants

The virus that causes COVID-19 has changed over time. The different versions of the virus that have developed are called variants. The bar graph above shows how common each variant of COVID-19 is at a specific time. Each color on the graph represents a different COVID-19 variant group. The number of cases of some variants (shown as a percentage) increase while others decline over time. The chart tracks the virus' evolution and shows which variants are most common.
Health authorities use this data to respond appropriately to the spread of COVID-19, using strategies to increase protection against the variants that are currently circulating. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) collected the data in this bar graph from six states: Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Minnesota. For a detailed breakdown of variant data, visit the CDC website.

COVID-19 in Long-term Care facilities

Data reflects the reported COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities within Ramsey County. It shows the impact of the virus on some of the most vulnerable populations. The numbers reported are a part of a larger effort to track and contain the spread of COVID-19 in critical settings, predicting possible spread of the virus and informing health policies.

COVID-19 death data

Data include a small number of deaths where COVID-19 listed on the death certificate but a positive test was not documented.

About the data

This COVID-19 surveillance dashboard is created and published by Saint Paul – Ramsey County Public Health, accessing data from the Minnesota Department of Health and the CDC. Access to certain health data expired with the end of the U.S. public health emergency on May 11, 2023 and subsequent end to required reporting of hospital data. Wastewater surveillance continues to identify and monitor SARS-CoV-2 variants. Summarized data from the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has been removed from this dashboard and archived. The Saint Paul COVID-19 Dashboard and COVID-19 Vaccine dashboard have also been archived.
Vaccine data
Vaccine data is provided by the Minnesota Department of Health's vaccine dashboard. Learn more about COVID-19 vaccine distribution at ramseycounty.us/vaccine.
