Hunger is a challenge for many Ramsey County residents. We have higher rates of food insecurity, also known as hunger, than the Minnesota state average and this gap widened during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, 12% of residents in Ramsey County were food insecure, whereas the state average was 10% (Figure 1). This trend continued in 2021.

This data displays the percentage of children under age 18 living in poverty for the years 2012-2016 by three geographies: Minnesota, Ramsey County and Saint Paul. Among these regions, Saint Paul has the highest percentage of children in poverty at 30.5 percent in 2016, which has decreased from 33.6 percent in 2012. Footnote 6.

This dataset displays the percentage of children under five years old living in poverty by the seven-county metro counties in 2016. It also displays the percentage of children living in poverty, by city, in Ramsey County.
