Job families are the broadest way of organizing classifications. Families are determined and named by category or type of work, not by department name. Series within a family provide structure and show pathways within a specific area of work based on the level of decision-making responsibility. The classification level reflects the level of the job classification within a series.

The number of series within a family varies based on the types of work or pathways that exist within the family; some families have only one series while others have several.
